National and State Tributes
Although born into the elite aristocracy
at Blenheim Palace in 1874, one of Churchill’s greatest
traits was an insatiable desire to live and learn; he found
many like-minded people in America. President Kennedy formalised
the association by conferring the great honor of citizenship
of the United States of America in 1963. At the White House,
Washington D.C. on April 9th, 1963 President Kennedy proclaimed
“Sir Winston Churchill, a son of America
though a subject of Britain, has been throughout his life
a firm and steadfast friend of the American people and the
American nation…”
The President went on to remark,
“We meet to honor a man whose honor
requires no meeting – for he is the most honored and
honorable man to walk the stage of human history in the
time in which we live.”
As the U.S. News & World Report Inc.
showed in a recent edition
“He has become a hero in the
United States, his mother’s homeland, where he remains
today the object of a cult status”
“Churchill’s sun at the
beginning of the third millennium has risen, no other citizen
of the last century of the second millennium the worst in
history deserves better to be recognised as a hero to mankind.”
For most of his 90 years Winston Churchill was an inspiration.
He lived under five monarchs, wrote many books, winning
the Noble Prize for Literature in 1955, he was a prolific
painter and even built walls in his Kentish estate. He believed
in determination and achievement.
