Medals and Decorations of Sir Winston Churchill

The insignia of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry gleamed in lone splendour on Sir Winston Churchill’s coffin.

The insignia of the orders and the medals awarded to Sir Winston were mounted on four black velvet cushions and carried in the procession to the cathedral and within the cathedral by four officers of The Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars, descendents of the first regiment in which Sir Winston was Colonel.

The heraldic form was conspicuous. The Windsor Herald carried the sword and the Somerset Herald the targe with Sir Winston Churchill's coat of arm painted on it. The Lancaster Herald held the crest of the Churchills taken from Sir Winston’s stall of the Garter Knights at Windsor. The York Herald carried the spurs. The heralds wore mourning scarves – black sashes over their silken tabards of gold, scarlet and blue.

Two heraldic banners, one of Sir Winston’s arms and the other of the arms of the Cinque Ports of which he was Warden, were carried by two officers of The Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars.
